About Me

The Drummer & The Studio

Hej! My name is Jan Pohl.

My journey into drum recording began in 1996 in a tiny home studio next to my practice room. No fancy gear. Just a drum kit, an 8-track cassette recorder, four microphones, and a few pieces of (cheap) outboard equipment. I was 16 years old.

The studio owner handed me his keys and said, “Have fun while I’m at work.”
He probably had no idea how much that simple trust would change my life.

There was no internet back then. No YouTube tutorials. No online courses. I learned the only way possible — by doing. By failing. By trying again. By reading the few books I could find. And through the generosity of experienced drummers, engineers, and producers willing to share their wisdom.

Over the past 27 years, music has taken me across Europe and parts of the US. I’ve experienced the full spectrum of this life as a musician.

I’ve played tiny bars after 10-hour drives, performing for a handful of people. I’ve stood on massive festival stages in front of 70,000 people, clapping and singing along.

I’ve worked on songs that reached a million+ streams — and on songs that never made it into the world. I’ve created tracks I’m incredibly proud of… and some stuff that simply wasn’t that great - hahahaha!

I’ve built several recording studios and while working on this career as a drummer, producer & recordist, I built a family. My wife and I raised three amazing kids (19, 17 & 14 years of age).

Through all the ups and downs, one thing never changed: I still absolutely love what I do.

What keeps me going isn’t just success. It’s growth. It’s the constant desire to become better — as a musician, as a creator, and as a human being. It’s the belief that in our field of work, anything is always possible if you’re willing to put in the work, stay curious, and keep showing up with a positive attitude.

Now, after all these years, I feel a strong calling to give back.
To share everything I’ve learned.

I want to help the next generation of independent, professional studio drummers not only improve their skills — but to get excited about their own growth.
